Mission successfully accomplished: SEPCOM Separators convincing at Eurotier 2014

04/12/2014  |  Hannover, Germany

Pigs, cattle, sheep, poultry or fish: every two years professionals in animal husbandry meet in Hanover to learn about new technologies and trends in the respective areas of breeding. The exhibition is held in conjunction with EnergyDecentral, an international trade fair for innovative energy supply. This makes it particularly interesting for WAM: the main target groups for SEPCOM Screw Press Separators, namely cattle and pig farms, as well as biogas plant operators gather for a week at the same location. Organiser of both events is the German Agricultural Society (DLG).

The basic idea of DLG to combine the topics of livestock and renewable energy in a single event is an aspect of practical relevance in Germany. By limiting the application of manure as fertilizer, a significant manure and nutrient surplus by region occurs. In particular, large cattle and pig farms need solutions that simplify handling of raw manure on the farm, and indicate to the farmers new uses for excess manure.
Biogas plants are interesting applications, too, as they ferment ─ among others ─ manure in order to gain energy. Large volumes of waste are generated in the form of digestate, which, as raw slurry in livestock farms, has to be handled and stored at great expense. Sales and economical handling and disposal of manure or digestate have, therefore, become a key issue for corporate success.

Processing of the arising substrates in farms and biogas plants results in important benefits. It also opens up interesting opportunities regarding usage and marketing:
  • Reduction of the amount of spread nutrients
  • Efficient application of substrates as fertilizer and reduction of application costs
  • Removal of nutrients and their conversion to forms of exploitation that can be transported economically and allow for more efficient storage
  • Manure and digestate are excellent soil fertilizer, i.e. appropriate processing leads to attractive, saleable products
  • Reduction of environmental pollution

LIVE-Event "Treatment of Manure and Digestate"

This year, the DLG organised together with WAM GmbH and other machine manufacturers a Special Event in the open air area, showing exemplary process chains for the treatment of manure and digestate. During the special event visitors could watch live different technologies for substrate processing and find out about different usage of processed manure and digestate.

At the beginning of the manure and digestate treatment process always stands separation of the substrate in its liquid and solid components by separator, decanter or centrifuge. As one of the world's leading manufacturers of separation technology, WAM had three Screw Press Separators (SEPCOM “Vertical”, SEPCOM “Horizontal” and SEPCOM “Mini”) on site, alternately separating pig manure and digestate providing excellent separation results. For the first time WAMGROUP’s SEPCOM Division showed a prototype of a new Micro-Filter which was combined with the SEPCOM “Vertical” for the event, allowing treatment of the already separated liquid phase with additional separation of finest remaining solids.

In addition to separation technology, plants for drying, pelletizing and compression of solids were on display. These technologies are used at the end of the treatment process enabling further processing of the separated solids into marketable end products such as fertilizer or fuel pellets.
The special event was accompanied by lectures in a forum where WAM informed about the function of SEPCOM Screw Press Separators and their benefits for livestock farms and biogas plants.

In the same way as the indoor WAM stand, also the company’s outdoor event was very well attended on all days of the show making the event a great success for WAMGROUP. Particularly surprising the large number of foreign visitors at the WAM stand emphasizing once again the high rank of Eurotier as the leading international trade fair. Moreover, it came out clear that the need and willingness to invest in separation technology is very high in neighbouring European countries and overseas, too.
